ND filter exposure calculator

Start with a metered shutter time before the filter, choose the labeled filter density, then verify the result with a test frame.

Enter seconds or a fraction such as 1/125. Allowed range: 0.000001–86,400 seconds.

Enter a baseline shutter time and choose a filter.

How the calculation works

Keeping aperture and ISO unchanged, each stop doubles the exposure time.

filtered time = baseline time × 2^stops

Assumes constant light and exact stop density. Filter tolerance, colour cast, camera limits, light leaks, and film reciprocity are not modeled.

Field workflow

  1. Compose and focus before fitting a strong filter.
  2. Make and record an unfiltered baseline exposure.
  3. Fit and seal the filter; calculate the nominal duration.
  4. Use a timer or remote, then inspect sharp anchors, motion, clipping, colour, and edges.
